A Study on the Effect of Mood-regulation Music Therapy on Improving School Adjustment and Negative Mood Regulation

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of music therapy based on mood regulation strategies on school adjustment and negative mood expectancies of school maladjustment adolescences. The participants were purposefully assigned into an experimental group and a comparative group from J and K middle schools in Seoul. For 8 sessions the experimental group had psycho-educational music therapy program based on mood regulation strategies in daily live, and the comparative group had Ukulele class once a week for one hour. The scores of MMR, School Adjustment and NMR showed that the both groups were statistically equivalent. Repeated Measure ANOVA was used to analysis the differences between two groups. In addition, the effect sizes for treatment of School Adjustment and NMR between two groups were calculated by using eta square. The results of the study as follow. MMR(F=10.39, p<.01), school adjustment(F=6.12, p<.05) and NMR(F=57.01, p<.001) scores of the experimental group showed significantly higher than the comparative group. The effect size for the treatment in school adjustment was ¥ç©÷=.254 and NMR was ¥ç©÷=.760. The results of this study indicate that psycho-educational music therapy program based on mood regulation strategies is an effective treatment method for school maladjustment adolescences¡¯ school adjustment and negative mood regulation.
